Biigtigong Nishnaabeg and the Town of Marathon Officially Sign Shareholder Agreement

to Develop Commercial Port on Peninsula Harbour

(November 17, 2022) Biigtigong Nishnaabeg/Marathon, ON: - Biigtigong Nishnaabeg and the Town of Marathon have signed a legally binding Shareholder Agreement to establish the Peninsula Harbour Port Authority Corporation. The execution and delivery of this Agreement formalizes the establishment, creation, and operation of a commercial Port Authority on Peninsula Harbour that will create new employment and economic development opportunities by servicing regional mining, forestry, logistics, and manufacturing industries while respecting the environment and Lake Superior.

States Duncan Michano, Chief of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, “Biigtigong Nishnaabeg are pleased to enter into a partnership with the Town of Marathon to officially create the Port Authority which will operate a commercial port at the site of the former mill site dock. We look forward to the economic opportunities this will bring to both Biigtigong and Marathon. When we work together, we prosper together. Miigwetch.”

Says Rick Dumas, Mayor for the Town of Marathon, “We are pleased to announce this new partnership with Biigtigong Nishnaabeg. We have worked in partnership on this concept for several years now, so it is exciting to see that we are moving forward with this project and unlocking its economic potential. This will be a critical development to help build and sustain the local and regional economy and create new business and industry opportunities.”

The Peninsula Harbour Port Authority Corporation is a 50/50 joint venture between the communities and the inaugural Board of Directors for the Corporation has been selected and will include Chief Duncan Michano and Juanita Starr, Director of Sustainable Development, from Biigtigong Nishnaabeg and Mayor Rick Dumas and Daryl Skworchinski, Chief Administrative Officer, from the Town of Marathon.
