The Town of Marathon Council issues the following public statement and documentation regarding a public statement issued by Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Chief and Council on October 14, 2026, to establish a factual, chronological account of the communications, meetings, and efforts involving Mayor Rick Dumas, the Town of Marathon, and Chief Duncan Michano of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg following comments made at a January 26, 2026, Marathon Council meeting.

MARATHON, ON – The Town of Marathon is currently finalizing architecture plans and has submitted project funding applications to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund and Fednor to convert the former Town-owned Ontario Provincial Police Station on Hemlo Drive, into a new, six thousand (6,000) square feet, Marathon Public Library space.

The Towns of Marathon, Terrace Bay, Manitouwadge and Schreiber are seeking qualified individuals to serve on the North Shore Compliance Audit Committee (NSCAC) for the 2026 Municipal Election.

The Committee is an independent statutory body responsible for reviewing applications for compliance audits of municipal election campaign finances and determining whether further action may be required where potential contraventions of the Municipal Elections Act have occurred.

Individuals with experience or knowledge in areas such as accounting, auditing, finance, law, municipal government, governance, or compliance are encouraged to apply.
