Hockey

Marathon is a self-proclaimed hockey town and for good reason! Whether you're lacing up for yourself, your child(ren), or your partner, there’s a league or program waiting for you.

The Community Services and Recreation Department also offers a variety of drop-in hockey programs throughout the season. Be sure to check the calendar regularly for upcoming sessions and events.

Heroes and Hockey Classic

Held every November, the Heroes and Hockey Classic is a proudly local event organized by the Marathon Old Timers. This annual tournament celebrates both Marathon’s strong hockey culture and its deep ties to Canadian military service.

The weekend features a ceremonial opening puck drop, honouring current and former Canadian Armed Forces members from the Marathon area, followed by a semi-formal appreciation dinner and dance. A range of fundraising activities also take place throughout the event.

The tournament’s purpose is two-fold: to pay tribute to the brave men and women of Canada’s military, especially those from our own community and to provide a memorable weekend of hockey and community spirit. Proceeds from the event support the Legion Building Fund, which helps maintain, repair, and upgrade the Marathon Legion Branch 183 for future generations.
