Fishing and Hunting

Fishing

Marathon offers some of the best fishing opportunities around! Whether you’re casting your line into the vast waters of Lake Superior or trying your luck on one of our smaller inland lakes, you’re sure to reel in a catch.

Outside of Ontario’s Family Fishing Weeks, a valid fishing licence is required. For details on how and where to get a licence, visit the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry’s website.

Licence-free family fishing

Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario without buying a fishing licence, during:

  • Family Fishing Weekend: February 15–17, 2025
  • Mother’s Day Weekend: May 10–11, 2025
  • Father’s Day Weekend: June 14–15, 2025
  • Family Fishing Week: June 28–July 6, 2025

Follow fishing rules

Licence-free periods are a great reminder of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery and the importance of protecting it for future generations. During these times, you must still:

  • follow conservation licence catch limits;

  • respect size limits and sanctuaries;

  • comply with all fishing regulations.

Hunting

Northern Ontario is home to vast stretches of forest, offering exceptional hunting opportunities.

However, within the Town of Marathon’s boundaries, discharging a firearm — including barreled weapons, air pellet guns, longbows, and crossbows — is strictly prohibited under By-Law No.968.

Before planning your hunt, be sure to review the Ministry of Natural Resources Hunting Regulations and the Government of Ontario’s guidelines for hunting around Marathon, whether you are a resident or a non-resident.
