Tiny Home Subdivision Street Officially Named “Poppy Lane”
At the March 9, 2026 Regular Meeting of Council, Council selected Poppy Lane as the official name for the new Tiny Home Subdivision following the Town of Marathon's public naming process.
A total of 65 submissions were received from residents and community members. The submissions reflected a range of ideas representing the community's identity, geography and history. The report was presented to Council for information and direction in accordance with the Municipality's Naming/Renaming Policy, with all submitted names provided for consideration.
To recognize the community's participation in the process, all submitted name suggestions will be posted on the Tiny Home webpage for public viewing.
Following discussion, Council agreed on the name Poppy Lane, noting that it reflects the area's geography, history and significance.
The selected name was inspired by a submission recognizing Johnny Anniuk, one of the earliest residents of the area and the last person to live along what was previously known as Trailer Park Road. Mr. Anniuk was well known in the community, particularly for his garden, where he grew many varieties of flowers including poppies and often shared seeds with residents he met while walking through town.
The name Poppy Lane was also noted as a meaningful choice given the road's proximity to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 183, making it both a tribute to Mr. Anniuk and a symbolic connection to remembrance within the community.
Council also expressed interest in recognizing Mr. Anniuk through the installation of a commemorative plaque or bench once the subdivision is fully developed.
