Property Standards
Lawn & Grass Care
On May 8, 2023 Council adopted the Yard Maintenance By-Law 2057. By-law 2057 repealed the former Yard Maintenance By-Law 1905, and includes the following regulations.
Under By-law 2057:
-
Grass and weeds must be kept under 20 cm in height year-round.
-
Property owners are responsible for maintaining the ditches in front of their property.
-
The Town maintains side ditches adjacent to private properties.
-
Defined wildflower gardens are exempt if clearly separated from the lawn.
-
Yards, grounds, and vacant land must be kept free of garbage, refuse, and waste.
-
Dead or damaged trees, branches, and limbs that could pose a safety risk must be removed.
-
Animal waste must be regularly removed to prevent significant accumulation.
Non-compliance:
If a property is not maintained according to the by-law, Town staff and/or contractors may enter the property to perform necessary work. Costs for this work may be billed back to the property owner.
Inoperative Vehicles, Boats & Trailers
By-law 2057 also addresses the storage of inoperative vehicles, boats, trailers, and their parts.
Storage is only permitted if:
-
The item is stored in an enclosed building, or
-
The item is fully covered with a weather-resistant, opaque tarp in good repair — only one such covered item is allowed per yard, or
-
The item is undergoing active restoration, and is screened from view of neighbouring properties, sidewalks, and roads.
This section does not apply to vehicles, boats, or trailers used for a legitimate business legally operating on the property.
