Animal Control

The Town of Marathon Animal Care and Control By-Law ensures the wellbeing and safety of pets and residents.

Please be aware of some of the rules of owning a dog in Marathon:

  • You must provide safe and humane living conditions for your dog;
  • You must pick up dog feces immediately;
  • Dogs must be indoors, leashed, or securely contained at all times;
  • Annual dog licence required; tag must be worn on the collar;
  • You must inform the Town if a dog changes ownership or address;
  • You may have up to 3 dogs per household;
  • You are permitted to keep a total of no more than six (6) domestic pets (dogs and cats combined) in a residential dwelling, with a maximum of three (3) dogs and six (6) cats over the age of twenty (20) weeks

Dog Tag Fees:

  • Altered: $15

  • Unaltered: $20

  • Seniors (60+): Free

If your untagged dog is picked up by the Municipal By-Law Enforcement Officer and you can't be reached, it will be taken to the pound.

  • Pound (under 12 hrs): $35.12

  • Pound (full day/holiday): $70.25

  • After-hours release: $187

  • A valid dog tag must be purchased before pickup.

 

  • Cleaning up after your dog is required by law.

  • Failing to do so can result in a $155 fine.

Not all bear sightings are emergencies. Know who to call:

In an Emergency – Call 911 or Local Police
If a bear:

  • Enters a schoolyard while school is in session

  • Tries to enter a home or building

  • Stalks or threatens people

  • Lingers after killing pets or livestock

  • Wanders into a public gathering

In a Non-Emergency – Call Bear Wise: 1-866-514-2327
If a bear:

  • Checks garbage or breaks into a shed

  • Climbs a tree or passes through your yard

  • Knocks over a barbecue or bird feeder

The Bear Wise line is available 24/7 from April 1 to November 30.
