Official Plan / Zoning By-Law

Marathon Official Plan & Zoning By-Law

The Town of Marathon is currently working with WSP, a leading planning and engineering firm, to update our Official Plan and Zoning By-law. These important documents will guide future growth, development, and land use in our community. The Official Plan sets out the long-term vision for the town, while the Zoning By-law implements that vision through detailed regulations on how land can be used. This project will include opportunities for public input and community engagement. We’re committed to ensuring that residents have a voice in shaping the future of Marathon.

Stay tuned for updates, including opportunities to get involved and have your say.

The Zoning By-law manages the land use within Town by indicating:

  • how land can be used; and
  • the required standards for that use.

These standards include lot size and dimensions, setbacks from property lines, building location, building type, and parking requirements.

Committee of Adjustment and minor variances

The Committee is empowered to perform such duties as prescribed by the Planning Act, such as minor variance applications to the Town's Zoning By-Law and exercises consent granting authority.

To apply for a minor variance fill out the Minor Variance Application Form and bring it into the Town Office.

For more information contact the Town Office.

An official plan outlines how land in a municipality should be used. It is prepared with input from the community and helps to ensure that future planning and development will meet the specific needs of the community.

An Official Plan deals with issues, such as:

  • Where new housing, industry, offices and shops will go;
  • What services will be needed (ex. roads, water mains, sewers, parks and schools); and
  • When, and in what order, parts of your community will grow

In 2015, Marathon approved its most recent Official Plan.

We update our Official Plan every five years to reflect changes in the community and economy in accordance with the Ontario Planning Act.
