The Emergency Services department is comprised of 38 volunteer members and a full time chief, and is broken down as follows:

  • 27 Firefighters

Reliable Services

The department operates out of its fire hall located at 6 Hemlo Drive where it offers these services to the residents of Marathon:

  • Structural firefighting
  • Wild land firefighting
  • Vehicle extrication on a 100 kilometer stretch of the TransCanada Highway
  • Water and Ice Rescue
  • Low angle rope rescue
  • Ground based Search and Rescue for lost persons,
    ie. berry pickers, hunters
  • Snowmobile based rescue for lost or injured persons
  • Fire prevention, inspections and public education

The department has six of its members that have completed the required course of study as laid out by Ontario's Office of The Fire Marshall, in the Company Officers Training Program, an exhaustive 4 year process. The department is also fully compliant with the internationally recognized incident management system, in order to offer to the residents of Marathon the highest quality of professional fire protection.

The department is equipped with:

  • 2006 Ford F-250 crew cab utility vehicle
  • 2005 Skidoo Skandic snowmobile X2
  • 2008 E-One Triple Combination Pumper
  • 2002 Superior 1,500 gallon tanker
  • 2002 Ford F-550 super duty highway rescue
  • 1996 Superior E-One triple combination pumper
  • 1996 ATV with trailer for wild land firefighting
  • Snowbulance fully enclosed tow behind rescue sled for snowmobile rescues
  • 1986 Ford heavy rescue

The department is involved with many fire safety programs such as Learn Not to Burn, Older and Wiser, and Risk Watch, to name a few. Public Education is carried out throughout the year by presentations at local malls, schools, service clubs, and during Fire Prevention week each October. Smoke Alarm and batteries for them are provided by the Marathon Volunteer Firefighter's Association. The department will also provide free home fire safety inspections for residents, and will install smoke detectors if requested, for residents as well.
