Cross Canada Century Flight

The Town of Marathon was proud to be a stopover on John Lovelace's Cross Canada Century Flight that occurred July 17-28, 2009. On July 21, 2009, Marathon became a part of Canadian history commemorating the 100th year of flight in Canada as over fifty (50) aircraft from every part of Canada landed at Marathon airport, the "Biggest/Little airport in Canada".

After some of the planes had been tied down and the ground crew gave the "all clear", spectators were allowed onto the grounds to get a closer look at the planes and talk to the pilots. We hope all of the pilots and crews enjoyed their overnight stay in our community.

Thanks to everyone that participated including the numerous volunteers (marshals, ramp crew, fuelers, reception committee, emergency services crews), the event sponsors (Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, Barrick Gold, Trottier Bus Lines, Sign & Embroidery Designs, Marathon Home Hardware, Marathon Harbour Inn, Shaw Cable, Town of Marathon); the hundreds of spectators from Marathon and surrounding area; the organizations that provided refreshments for the participants; the pilots and crew members; and John Lovelace, his organizing committee and film crew.  For more information about the event and the upcoming documentary film that premieres on January 2, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. on Global (repeat airings on February 26 on the History Channel), check out the following sites:
