Adjustment Committees

Community Adjustment (October 2011)

Where there is evidence of downsizing within a community, a community adjustment process may be implemented. The Adjustment Advisory Program of the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities (MTCU) works with a Community Adjustment Committee (CAC), which addresses the future sustainability for the area.

Marathon's CAC has a one-year mandate and will be developing a multi-functional action plan for the broader community as a whole that will include:

  • Addressing the needs of the small business sector
  • Ensuring the population has skills to obtain future jobs in the community
  • Coordinating social services
  • Reviewing recommendations of the socio-economic impact study from Stillwater Mining to help implement key deliverables

Marathon's CAC includes representatives from several public sector entitles and also from various sectors including small business, seniors, mining, health services, education and Pic River First Nation. Organizations or individuals interested in participating on a sub-committee to work on one of the projects identified above or interested in finding out more about the functions of the Committee are invited to contact:

Labour Adjustment (April 2009 - October 2010)

imageThe Marathon Labour Adjustment Committee was formed to assist people being laid off due to the closure of Marathon Pulp Inc. (MPI) to move toward suitable re-employment or other satisfactory options.  One of their functions is to operate an Action Centre to provide services such as job search assistance, outreach to affected workers, personal support in dealing with the stress of job loss, financial counselling, etc.

The Marathon Area Action Centre (MAAC) closed its doors as of October 29, 2010 after a year and a half of helping displaced workers and their families.  We thank all those that came through our doors, either as clients or as organizations that helped with funding, sponsorship, advice or encouragement - all our your support was appreciated.
